I've been reading all the wonderful outpouring of love and help to Philippine for the people affected by the typhoon. Then over a conversation during a friend's wedding dinner, realization dawned on me that we have a need here too....

An appeal is going out to help a local NGO in Kuantan to help direct supplies and support to the flood-hit people of Kuantan thru the Komuniti Harapan Kuantan. They need

If only...

I realized that the star of our country is not in the best place right now. News of entire families committing suicide because of financial dire straits coupled with news of petrol price hikes speaks of the hopelessness of certain quarters of our rakyat who is experiencing hopelessness.

It is said, that without water we can live for 3 days, without air we can live for 3 minutes, without hope, 3 seconds. While all that is falling and crumbling around us, the people, need hope. So that those of us who are fighting will have hope that the people we are fighting for will be around to see the fulfillment of the quest.

The people need hope, hope to hang on to. Hope for survival, hope for a better Malaysia for them and their families. Hope, the cheapest yet priceless intangible commodity, most available but completely elusive. Hope.

There is hope, hope of a better Malaysia in our young people. It is in the young people like the EPIC team, John-son Oei, Loh Jon Ming, Tan Q-Pei, Madeline Ho, Lee Kesam and youth like them, that I have hope for Malaysia. It is young people that hope resides and must be allowed to carry on for the change that we crave for.

Legacy in living

It is interesting, most of this year's commercial now has a flavoring of embracing and/or initiating change from the youth's perspective. But the words for the pictures still come from old style poetry. Stumbled on this poem from Charles Bukowski while watching an Eastern European Levi's ad. I believe it speaks to  all of us who are going through the throes of change in our Malaysia.

Indeed it is our life. It is our country and if we do nothing now thinking that it will change for the better by itself, we are mistaken. We are now at a moment in time where our actions will have direct impact on our way of life in this millennia, and resonate into the next millennia.

Will you go forth to live with a difference? I will.
Will you live a life that offers light in darkness? I will definitely try.

I am very proud to have been part of my nation's history where the ordinary citizens were awakened to take true ownership of our own country.

Yes! I was there at the BERSIH 2.0 rally. There have been many reports about the police brutalities and the unnecessary use of force by the authorities to disperse a peaceful crowd standing up for the democratic right of all in the nation, and being a first hand eye witness, I can attest that these reports are accurate.

And yet, there are many mainstream newspaper that has carried reports that are filled with inaccuracies (tantamount to lies), like only 6,000 showed up for the rally (as you can observe from the videos and many pictures here, that all these are lies), and that we were violent (also false), and that we had stormed a hospital because we are rowdy (completely false!).

The accusation that the BERSIH 2.0 participants stormed the hospital  and the police had to act to protect the hospital is completely false. Let me recount from my first hand experience (as I was one of the dots on the Jalan Pudu crowd).

We were TRAPPED by the FRUs and police force on Jln Pudu. There was a contingent of FRUs at Dataran MBB shooting tear gas & water canon at us and another contingent of police personnel arresting people running in their direction at the other end of Jln Pudu from Swiss Garden Hotel. So, the scene of tens of thousands of people sandwiched on the road, just standing there while the brute of the Malaysian FRU and police force was bearing down on us demanding us to BERSURAI (Disperse), where did you want us to go? And while we were trying to get them to allow us an option, the peaceful crowd was chanting "WE WANT PEACE", multiple tear-gas canisters descended on us (the ordinary, un-armed, peaceful citizens) forcing many to run from the canisters. Remember, we were sandwiched between 2 contingent of FRU and police units at both ends of one road. Those who ran towards them were beaten, and arrested. The rest of us had to run into shops and whatever little cover we could find to obtain some non-toxic air to breathe! The result of this, a lot of us ran into the hospital compound (me being one of them). And the next thing that happened shocked me, the authorities shot 2 canisters of tear gas into the hospital compound! I was completely disgusted by this exhibition of blatant disregard for the purpose of hospitals! And these are the authorities that we are suppose to trust with the safety of our country!?!?

In the meantime, the BERSIH 2.0 participants were trying to "bersurai" as demanded by the police, but where were we to go to leave?! And by then, I wanted to go home, was tired and with 2 rounds of intense tear-gassing and water canons, I reckon I have done my duty as an ordinary Malaysian guarding the sanctity of the election process. But I could not leave... so, a number of us were forced to climb the fence behind the hospital so that we can comply with the wishes of the authorities to disperse. The men were very very helpful and considerate, they helped build a make shift stairs for the women, children and aged to cross over the fence. That was how I "escaped" the brutal police and the violent FRUs.

One of the major side-benefit I got from taking part in this rally is my changed view towards my Malay brothers. In the heat and choke of the tear-gas, they had the discipline, consideration and presence of mind to take care of the aged, women and children first. And while they were being chased down by the police and FRUs, I witnessed remarkable self-control where the entire crowd did not rise to beat down the police as a group of police were beating down one person (classic police brutality).

I am also very glad to say that the Chinese participation in this round has drastically increased! Well done! The rest of Malaysia has awoken from their BN-induced stupor.

The overwhelming Malay presence on the side of BERSIH 2.0 was great, and let me just quote what I overheard a Malaysian of Chinese-Indian descent say "The malays deserve to rule this country, they really love Malaysia!" And I am proud to say that if anyone in the crowd with us will become the next PM, we will be in better hands that we are now!

If you are not... its ok. I understand and it is perfectly acceptable that you have made a decision that the walk is not worth the inconvenience and risk of life and limb. With all the recent crackdown in the run-up to July 9, it is really intimidating.

But there is one thing that you could do as you go around doing your weekend chores & errands, wear yellow! Anything yellow, not necessarily a BERSIH 2.0 shirt, but a yellow t-shirt.

Why?

Because, you believe in a clean and fair democracy.
Because, you have had enough of the corruption and the injustices in the country
Because, you know better.

So, wear yellow and celebrate with us. Celebrate the awakening of a nation, celebrate the courage of all of us in each of us!

More than churches opening doors

There has been a slew of new voters registration exercises happening of late. I hear so many things on the news and read many in the alternative media. I have heard Tony Pua ranting on how the Assistant Registrars have been given a tougher time in registering voters (with form restrictions).

I have also heard that there has been many issues that the EC are facing themselves as the political parties are ramping up their voters registration exercises (including UMNO youth wanting to register 4 million youth).

But this piece of news is by far the most encouraging piece of news. It is a great display of cooperation between the public office (SPR, State Govt), the civil society (church, GEL/EPIC) and private community (businesses sponsored food, drinks & thank you gifts).

I wish and pray more of such will happen in the future. And not just with churches but also with temples & mosques.

Why should this be an issue

UK - Is this the way we are going?

United Kingdom is going to the polls today.

Even in our EX-colonial master's homeland, the voters want change too! And it is said that there is possibility of a hung parliament as it is a very close fight. This is where the Queen will play her role as a constitutional monarch (just like in 1974).
 
Will our Sultan's learn from her!? And take the courage to form a parliament for the people! Or NOT!

Interesting to see if we suffer the same fate in the next GE where it is a spilt in the country, and if we will be able to hold a matured decision making model, or are we going to show our immaturity.

Voice Your Choice

According to the Election Commission (EC) Deputy Chairman, Wan Ahmad Wan Omar in a report dated in January 2010, 4.39 million or some 28% of Malaysians over the age of 21 has yet to register as a voter. These are alarming statistics which we believe we have to do something about. To put things into perspective, the state of Selangor itself has an estimated 787,000 unregistered voters.

The decisions we make today shape our tomorrow, individually as a community, and ultimately as a nation.

That is why we are beginning this EPIC movement we call EPIC for Unity.

This is where we want the people to start having faith & hope in this nation that we call HOME and love dearly. It is understandable that it has indeed been challenging to develop such positive feelings toward a nation that displays such a blatant disregard for ethics and the rapid decay of moral values in our community. We understand that we are disillusioned and feelings of helplessness have inhabited our minds and wills, causing us to stop striving for what we youths want.

We want to believe that the power of ‘one’ is not simply overrated, just rarely challenged

We want Positive Action not Negative Reactions

We want to integrate not tolerate

We want to stop complaining, and start acting

We want our friends to stop migrating overseas and our parents to stop telling us to do so

We want to be colour blind to our neighbours

We want to stand up to be responsible for our collective future and believe that others want to as well
We want all this but what are you willing to do to get it?

We want to voice our choice the best and most civil way we know how in practicing our democratic right...

Federal Constitution vis-a-vis Syariah Rule

Below is the news that Utusan Malaysia has published, and I have never trusted this publication for all the blatant spins they have made in the past (to further their bigoted propaganda). Therefore, I have my reservations as to actual context of the words spoken by the Selangor Sultan. For all I know, the whole spin is taken out of context COMPLETELY.

Having said that, Utusan is now spewing their illogical rationale that Islam being the national religion in Malaysia is enshrined in the Constitution and therefore everything that Islam uses in this country is exclusively for Moslems, above what the common law covers for the other rakyat who are not Moslems. Utusan is spouting that the Constitution, that protects ALL Malaysians, is subservient to Syariah by virtue of one section within the Federal Constitution. It is so preposterous it does not bear thinking about anymore.

On the issue of Allah, I believe in my Moslem brothers and sisters are not so easily confused by mere usage of words. I know they are of higher and greater intelligence than what UMNO, Utusan and their cohorts say they are.

Hey UMNO... the Moslems in Malaysia are highly intelligent and not easily confused. So, please stop abusing Islam in order to keep yourself in power!

(Utusan Malaysia) - Sultan Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah menitahkan semua pihak di negeri ini berpegang teguh kepada pendirian mengharamkan pengunaan kalimah Allah oleh agama selain Islam.
Pengerusi Majlis Agama Islam Selangor (MAIS), Datuk Mohamad Adzib Mohd. Isa hari ini memberitahu, titah itu dinyatakan dalam pertemuan beliau dengan baginda pada 5 Januari lalu.
Katanya, turut menghadap baginda ekoran isu pengunaan kalimah Allah oleh akhbar Herald-The Catholic Weekly ialah Mufti Selangor, Datuk Mohd. Tamyes Abdul Wahid; Ahli MAIS, Datuk Salehuddin Saidin; Setiausaha MAIS, Abdul Halem Hapiz Salihin serta Penasihat Undang-undang MAIS, Nurhani Salwa Jamaluddin di Istana Mestika di sini.
Menurut beliau, baginda memaklumkan pendiriannya mengenai perkara itu bertujuan memelihara akidah umat Islam serta menjaga keharmonian beragama setiap rakyat di Selangor.
“Dalam pertemuan itu, baginda menitahkan supaya isu penggunaan kalimah Allah oleh bukan Islam dibincangkan dengan teliti oleh ahli-ahli MAIS.
“Sebagai Ketua Agama Islam negeri, baginda mahu semua peringkat berpegang teguh dengan pendirian mengharamkan penggunaan kalimah Allah oleh agama lain,” katanya.
Beliau berkata demikian kepada pemberita selepas majlis taklimat dan perbincangan dengan 38 pertubuhan bukan kerajaan (NGO) Islam di masjid negeri di sini hari ini.
Mohamad Adzib berkata, Sultan Selangor turut meminta MAIS memaklumkan kepada rakyat tentang wujudnya undang-undang menghalang pengunaan kalimah Allah dalam agama bukan Islam.
Menurutnya, larangan itu termaktub dalam Enakmen Ugama Bukan Islam (Kawalan dan Perkembangan di Kalangan Orang Islam) yang diwartakan sejak 1988.
Malah, jelas beliau, larangan juga diputuskan Jawatankuasa Fatwa negeri pada 10 Jun 2008 yang memutuskan kalimah Allah khusus untuk umat Islam dan tidak boleh digunakan atau dimasukkan dalam agama lain.
Ekoran keputusan jawatankuasa itu serta Jawatankuasa Fatwa Kebangsaan yang memutuskan larangan tersebut pada Mei 2008, beliau menegaskan, MAIS membuat 14 ketetapan berhubung isu tersebut.
Menurutnya, antara ketetapan itu ialah istilah Allah bermaksud Tuhan Yang Maha Esa dan berlainan dengan maksud God dalam agama Kristian yang berkonsepkan Triniti (tuhan bapa, tuhan anak dan roh kudus).
“Jika kalimah Allah dibenar digunakan dalam ajaran Kristian, ia mendatangkan pelbagai implikasi membahayakan umat Islam pada masa depan kerana ia mengelirukan,” katanya.
Selain itu, Mohamad Adzib berkata, MAIS berpendirian keputusan Mahkamah Tinggi Kuala Lumpur pada 31 Disember lalu membenarkan Herald-The Catholic Weekly menggunakan kalimah Allah tidak selaras dengan Perlembagaan Persekutuan.
Perlembagaan menetapkan Islam agama rasmi Persekutuan dan keputusan itu juga bertentangan dengan Enakmen Ugama Bukan Islam (Kawalan dan Perkembangan di Kalangan Orang Islam) 1988 yang digubal berasaskan Perkara 11(4) Perlembagaan negara, katanya.
Beliau menegaskan, penggunaan kalimah Allah bagi merujuk agama bukan Islam tidak wajar dibicarakan di mahkamah kerana institusi itu bukan forum sesuai membincangkannya memandangkan ia perkara ‘non-justiciable’ di bawah bidang kuasa raja-raja Melayu.
Beliau turut memohon campur tangan Majlis Raja-raja selaku Ketua Agama Islam negeri-negeri selaras sumpah raja-raja Melayu untuk mempertahankan Islam pada setiap masa.
“Selain itu ialah mendesak Kerajaan Persekutuan menetapkan kes-kes berkaitan agama Islam tidak lagi dibicarakan di Mahkamah Sivil terutama melibatkan Hakim bukan Islam,” katanya.

Blowing up Malaysia!

Many people are angry now, there are alot of Malaysians who are aghast at what has happened!
Note, I say MALAYSIANS are aghast! Not chinese or indians, not buddhist or hindu. This is an attack on Malaysia, all of us has taken a hit.

It is indeed a very very sad thing to see a property destroyed to such degree. I guess, the thing to be  thankful for is that no one was actually hurt in all these attacks. 

Even the night guard (who was on duty at the Metro Tabernacle) escaped as he needed to use the toilet. It is amazing how God has protected all in this situation. The perpetrator and the victims are taken care of by God.

Having said all that, it was still sad to hear the building so badly damaged. I was thinking to myself, there must be a silver lining to this situation. There must be a reson this has happened, and how do we turn such a negative event into something positive and productive. There must be a good reason that this has happened. There must be a very good reason.., THERE HAS TO BE.

Then, the reason was revealed in the show of support from Muslims & other Malaysians alike. A nation that can rise to condemn and speak against this atrocity will unite as a people. We will no longer look at each other based on our differences, but based on our commonality. We are Malaysians and no one does something like that to our people and hear nothing from ALL of us (even if the perpetrators are amongst us).

One of our pastor friend received this wonderful text from the President of the Islamic Propagation Society International (IPSI).
"Good Evening Mr Kuilan, I Haji Kamaruddin Abdullah of IPSI strongly condemn the arson attack of the Metro Tabernacle Church in KL. We are now prepared to protect the safety of the churches in Malaysia. Please call us. OUR LOVE AND CARE TO OUR CHRISTIAN BRETHREN."

So, while the building is destroyed, I am glad to say that the spirit of unity is strengthened. And that is what we should all focus on. At this time of trouble, there is enemy in our midst hoping to tear us Malaysians apart. After they have done that, they will rape our country and pillage our people.

Let all Malaysians stand together against this act of violence and terrorism. Let us unite for our beloved country.

Will you be counted

Calling ALL anak bangsa Malaysia.... will we be identified as lost?! Will we stand up and reverse the effects of the past and take back the future of this country into our own hands... put your vote where your conscience is!



The truth is, we will continue in a slide until each of us make a decision to reverse the evil that is taking place.

China Vs 1 Malaysia

It really shows how serious each country's leadership is about eradicating corruption and bribery in the administration.

2 constitutions in Malaysia?

I remember reading in my history books about the freedom of religion being put in the Malayan Constituion, and that my freedom to choose any religion is a freedom and right protected by the constitution of this land.

Recent events have put a question in my mind. What is the question?

How come my muslim brothers and sisters cannot choose their religion? Why is it that when their forefathers made a decision to become a muslim, they cannot make a choice otherwise (according to the freedom guaranteed in OUR constitution?)

I have observed this freedom being extended to people in Turkey & Indonesia, so why not us? It is worrying to see how over-zealous the religious enforcement officers are carrying out punitive actions and having the government stand-by and watch like a eunuch. Powerless by their own past actions. I am supremely concerned that my fellow brothers and sister in Malaysia is losing a fundamental right and having the bullies descend upon them, their children, grandchildren and the generations beyond! Why the grave concern.... because, the way things are heading, we are going the way of some arabic nations where wife beating is legal.


And honor killing is acceptable!?!



Yes, I am concerned as a Malaysian.... as more than 65% of my fellow Malaysian brothers and sisters are impacted with this double constitution that has major implication as the road we travel seems to lead us to a place we cannot and must not go.

The responsibility is on the government, we are a civil nation with a national religion of Islam, but civil law is the common law of the land. Please defend the right of ALL Malaysians as guaranteed in our constitution!

No more ISA!

We marched today to tell the BN government what we want. The polls are coming in 2013, if the BN government still refuse to change its ways and remain relevant to the rakyat, then we will change the you!

Please listen to us. We have been trying to say this for a very long time..... we are shouting NOW! We no longer want the ISA.... we do not want this act to be reviewed, changed or anything like that, we want to remove this wicked law! This act that allows the BN government to terrorise Malaysia! We want it thrown OUT!

Nazri should think about what he has just said. It was arrogant and totally UMNO! Nazri's statement just showed how arrogant this government is!

Anak Bangsa Malaysia, RISE UP! register to vote! And when it is time to vote.... remember Perak, remember PKFZ, remember Kugan, remember Teoh Beng Hock & and rest of 1,805 who has died in custody since 2003. Remember them and VOTE your conscience!

A tragic Malaysian Death!

A death of a Malaysian in the hands of a Malaysian agency. A Malaysian agency who was suppose to uphold and safeguard the country's integrity has proven itself unworthy to carry out this duty (and I don't just mean the SPRM/MACC).

And whilst everyone is shouting for the Opposition not to policitise the matter, why is UMNO making it into a racial matter! The 30-yr-old father-to-be who died is a MALAYSIAN! Does it matter what ethnicity he is!??!

My humble opinion - it is a class matter. The ruling (elite) class against the mass (normal) class. Just because this anak bangsa Malaysia is not of prominent background, does not have any ties with the elite, his life is expendable!? To the point that the government & its enforcing agencies can go unscathed and not provide an answer to the rakyat?!?!

Answer me on Kugan's death, just because he has no buddies in high places and is not of high standing (profile) in the elite class, his death is left un-investigated and unanswered. No one is brought to justice or being held accountable & responsible for his death!? Answer the rakyat! And what about the thousands that have died in police custody? What about their deaths that is being hidden! I pray that all (each one) these deaths will be brought to light.

Whilst it shows that you still have human decency to communicate condolenscences, but you MUST bring the perpetrators to justice. The people wants and demands the truth & justice!

WHY?

Just attended the rally at Kelana Jaya Stadium. I must say that I am proud to be counted as an ordinary rakyat like those who came to the rally. Malaysians showed up in strength and we were comprised of all enthnicity and religious leanings.

We all came to tell MACC that we want the truth! And that the government of the day must allow a royal commission made up of ordinary rakyat to convince us that the entire proceeding is transparent! We will not take anything less! We want the truth and we want justice based on the truth!

No more lies! Especially from the BN government... if you don't buck up now and start doing the things that we have clearly communicated for you to do! I can assure YOU (BN Government) that you will not be voted back in power anymore! If anything, we will give you a small portion just to maintain a semblance of balance!

So heed this advice from the people you are suppose to serve! Set up the Royal Commission comprised of ordinary rakyat like myself! And be prepared to sack those found responsible! Do that! if you dare!
